20 Years of My Home: Then and Now

My Home turned 20 in November 2026! To celebrate, we’re taking a little trip down memory lane - from our first announcement to 30,000 social housing residents insured under the My Home brand today.

2006: Where My Home all began

My Home all started with a simple idea: contents insurance designed specifically for social housing tenants.

On 1 November 2006, the My Home Contents Insurance Scheme officially began.

An article in London Housing News announced the launch, followed by a mailer and telesales campaign introducing the scheme to NHF members. A lovely throwback to our early days!

My Home through the years: More choice, easier access

As residents’ needs have changed, My Home has evolved too.

We’ve introduced cover enhancements, optional extensions and more ways to apply - giving residents more choice and making access easier.

Throughout, our focus has stayed the same: supporting NHF members with a simple, affordable contents insurance solution for social housing tenants.

Sally Alvey, Product Manager added:

“When I joined in 2007, I remember the enthusiasm around the National Housing Federation’s My Home Contents Insurance Scheme. Its purpose was clear: to help tenants and residents in social housing access insurance for the belongings that matter to them.

As we celebrate 20 years of My Home, that purpose remains just as important. It has been a pleasure to work with housing organisations to raise awareness of contents insurance and help residents understand the cover available.”

Today: 30,000 reasons to celebrate

As of August 2026, 30,000 social housing residents* were insured under the My Home brand - a milestone we’re proud to celebrate alongside our 20th anniversary.

A big anniversary thank you!

As November draws to a close, thank you to the residents, housing associations and partners who’ve been part of our story.

Twenty years on, tenants remain at the heart of My Home.
